Mataaho Collective Wins Prestigious Venice Biennale Award
At the Venice Biennale awards ceremony, Sarah Hudson, speaking for Mataaho Collective, described the honor as a “once-in-a-lifetime” achievement comparable to winning Olympic gold. She emphasized that the recognition would inspire other queer and Indigenous artists, underscoring the exhibition’s exploration of Indigenous and queer culture.
Selected by an international panel of five judges, the collective’s installation—a large-scale woven structure of straps—was praised for its engineering, poetic evocation of matrilinear textile traditions, womb-like form, and interplay of light and shadow that connects ancestral techniques with future possibilities.
Representatives from Creative New Zealand and the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage hailed the win as a milestone for ngā toi Māori, celebrating its global relevance and the collective’s role in showcasing New Zealand art at its finest.
